Abstract
1. The result of radiotherapy on 88 patients with carcinoma of the breast treated with Co-60 teletherapy unit during three year period from November 1963 to October 1966 was reported.
2. Whether or not treated operatively prior to radiotherapy, all patients were given a total tumor dose of 5, 000 Rad with a daily tumor dose of 200 Rad in 5 weeks to the breast proper and lymph nodes bearing area using a bolus.
3. Recurrence rate was 9.1% in the group with surgery plus post-operative irradiation and 18% in radiotherapy alone group.
4. For the management of breast cancer, a choice between surgery and radiotherapy should be made accurately and post-operative radiotherapy following radical mastectomy was found contributory for the prevention of local recurrence and the need for post-operative irradiation of lymph node bearing area after radical mastectomy, especially when histologic examination of the specimen has shown a large number of involved lymph node.
